An as-yet anonymous buyer has been found for the Forest Cafe building in Bristo Place … The Guardian’s art diarist Charlotte Higgins says she is hearing rumours the buyer may be a chain coffee shop. But the Forest’s supporters are determined to fight back.
A host of local performers have waived their fees to support Bristo Place’s Forest Cafe, which faces being forced out of its venue. Kat Corbett, one of the charity’s fundraising volunteers, tells us about Thursday’s Alice in Wonderland themed evening…
Bad news from Edinburgh: the Forest Café, home of Forest Fringe, the most inventive and fresh theatre and performance art you’ll see during the August festivals, is in the process of being sold from under the feet of the artists’ collective who lease the building year-round. The identity of the buyer is not known, but rumours circulate about a chain coffee shop: and what a shame it would be for this quirky, rough-round-the-edges space to be brought into anonymous corporate line. If the sale goes through, this August would be the last that the Forest Fringe, directed by Andy Field and Deborah Pearson, would be able to operate out of the cafe. Still, my guess is that – ingenious and bright as they are – they will find a new home.
“The buyers haven’t been in touch with us themselves so we don’t know who they are or what their intentions for the Forest are – but if they’re expecting us to pack up and leave quietly they’re mistaken. Potential buyers should remember that last time we had a big scare, when Eidyn Architects wanted to turn the building into private flats, objection letters from around the world forced them to withdraw.”
The estimable Forest Cafe in Edinburgh – which many of you will know from Forest Fringe during the festival – is in the middle of a three-day fundraising series to try and secure its future. Do what you can to help them, because it’s a wonderful organisation, and Edinburgh would be poorer without it.

Now due to the bankruptcy of the EUS organisation that owned this building the venue is put up for sale. This is a very sad news for people who used to meet in the Forest Cafe regularly to take part in concerts, workshops and art exhibitions, use free internet, enjoy vegetarian food or to swap clothes and books…
