FOREST CAFÉ STUNNED AT PWC DECISION
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) have said they would rather leave a building empty than receive rent to help pay off the creditors they are supposed to be representing. PwC are the administrators for Edinburgh University Settlement, who were declared bankrupt and forced into administration last October. The decision follows the collapse of the sale for several buildings previously owned by EUS. PWC have said they would not consider the Forest as tenants for the former Edinburgh Congressional Church in Bristo Place despite being the sitting tenant and the only party willing to rent the premises.

The Forest has announced the first plans for its final Fringe in Bristo Place, filling the building’s three floors with free performances for world class acts and local talent. The self-sufficient community and arts centre is moving to a new home at the end of August but plans to leave its old home in high spirits after an exciting Festival. Highlights include the award-winning Forest Fringe, performances from the Free Belarus Theatre, international poetry stars, plus sights and sounds from around the world.
The Forest collective has pledged to use the sale of its current premises as a means to transform the organisation. In late May, the “For Sale” sign over the entrance to the building in Bristo Place was removed and the Forest was told that a buyer was found for the building. The sale is not yet complete, sources say the missives should be finalised soon. Despite this, the Forest is determined to still provide an arts space in Edinburgh that is free and accessible to all.
Campaigners are stepping up their fight to save independent arts centre The Forest Café by holding a whole month of fundraising events.
Local and international artists, including superstar musician and artist Amanda Palmer, have donated their work to a charity art auction to benefit the Save the Forest Campaign. The auction will be held at the AXO Gallery in Leith this weekend (preview 7-10pm Friday 13th May; auction 6-10pm Saturday 14th May).
The Roofraiser benefit concerts produced by The Forest Cafe and Ten Tracks for the Save the Forest Campaign have been a resounding success, and have inspired a second series of benefit concerts, Roofraiser II, that will be held in Edinburgh throughout May.
