Inky Fingers Open Mic

The Inky Fingers Open Mic is back! We’re still the fourth Tuesday of the month, from 8-11pm, and we’re still free to come and free for anyone to perform, regardless of style, experience, or identity.
While the Forest campaigns to buy back 3 Bristo Place, we’ll be performing at The Third Door (formerly Medina) on Lothian St. See you there!
We want to hear from everybody. We want your poems, your rants, your ballads, your short stories, your diaries, your experimental texts, your heart, your mind, your body. We want the essay on your summer holidays you wrote when you were four, your adolescent haiku, and extracts from your eventually-to-be-completed epic fantasy quadrilogy. We want to hear your best new work as well. And we want people to care about the way words are performed.
Our feature performer this month is Paula Varjack — an artist on the move, bringing her own unique infusion of spoken word, videography, and music to stages infamous and abandoned across the globe.

Forest’s 48h Film Hunt
Want to be the next Tarantino? Spielberg? Hitchcock? Or, even better… the next Woody Allen? Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary with:THE 48H FILM HUNT!
Ok, so it’s more of an improvised and on the run attempt to fame, but trust us, you’ll have the time of your lives.
Take 1: Sign your team up at projects@theforest.org.uk.
Take 2: Come to Word of Mouth Cafe on Friday, October 14th at 5pm to pick your filming location and theme.
Take 3: Go crazy creative and film-happy for 48 whole hours.
Take 4: Submit your film of max 10min by 6pm on Sunday, October 16th at the same glamorous cafe.
Take 5: Sit back and watch your masterpeice along with all the other films submited. Get judged and maybe even win a small and insignificant prize.
Or, if you’re not feeling particularly creative that weekend, just come to the film screenings on Sunday from 7pm on. Free popcorn and entertainment guaranteed!
If not, it’s ok. We’ll always have Paris.

Folks, we’re nearly halfway to out £100,000 target. We’re within sight of buying back 3 Bristo Place and reopening the Forest there. (If you’ve just landed on this site and what to know more about the campaign, read on here.) The support we’ve had so far from all quarters, from artists to MSPs, has been overwhelming. But we still need your help to run that last stretch to the target.
Politicians from across the political spectrum have pledged support for Edinburgh’s free arts and events space. Following last week’s support from the Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop (1), MSPs are now adding their verbal support for The Forest’s volunteer-run campaign to buy the premises at 3 Bristo Place. The Culture Secretary praised The Forest’s August programme and vowed during last week’s Question Time to help arrange a meeting with her civil servants to help with the fundraising efforts. Since then, Alison Johnstone, the Lothian Region’s Green MSP, has lodged a Parliamentary Motion (2) calling on Holyrood to support the fundraising efforts.

Silent Art Auction!

Out of the Blue Drill Hall, Dalmeny St
Over 30 local and international artists are donating their work to a charity art auction in support of SAVE THE FOREST. This campaign is part of a large scale fundraising drive to allow The Forest Cafe to buy 3 Bristo Place. The event is being held at Out Of The Blue Drill Hall in Leith on Friday September 23rd from 6:30-10:00pm. This is an incredible opportunity for everyone to not only view fine art, but to take it home at the end of the night. With raffle tickets for £1 and opening bids on all pieces at £5, original art has never been more available to the public. Entry is free with live acoustic sets by surprise special guests. This unique event further highlights how The Forest strives to bring our community together.
Dear Forest,
As we write this, Forest is leaving Bristo Place. We’re taking out the lights, the food, the amps, the chairs, the paperwork, the kitchen sink. When you walk past 3 Bristo Place on September 1st, it will be empty. We’re all a bit emotional about this. But we can tell you one thing:

The Fringe is over, all the posters and crowds have gone and Edinburgh’s year-round, fringe venue is closing its doors.
The Forest is today beginning departure from Bristo Place, but is determined to return—this time as owners rather than tenants of the building. The volunteer-run open-access multi-arts venue and charity has launched a WeFund campaign to raise sufficient funds to allow it to buy their current location. The Forest will use the money raised as a deposit towards the purchase of the former Edinburgh Congressional Church. However, the charity won’t take the money from supporters’ bank accounts until a mortgage is secured.
